Distributor Patches: Linspire 5.0 and Some Others

beineri's picture

First, greetings to everyone who is still (already 2nd April here) reading this entry on http://planet.gnome.org. Smiling

I wanted to complete my collection of distributor patches with the ones Linspire has applied to the Qt and KDE packages in their Five-0 release. So I contacted them because I didn't find a hint where to get the sources. Their support offered to send me a CD with the source code. I again stated that I'm only interested in Qt and KDE related patches and would prefer a download. Seems I was the first asking for that or for sources at all. Smiling They put up two Source CD images on a slow server which they linked in their warehouse (http://my.linspire.com My Products/CD Downloads). So I registered there, downloaded 1.2GB 10+ hours long and then had to diff myself against the original tarballs. I guess the (L)GPL is not talking about getting patches, convenient and fast. Sad The result of all efforts are compressed 845KB big (size is partly due to release->branch diffs) Linspire 5.0 patches. On first sight Linspire didn't patch much, at least much less than SUSE or Mandrake in comparison.

Other recent patches additions include the patches of ArkLinux 2005.1, Mandrake 10.2-rc2 and Fedora Core4-test1. The SUSE 9.3 (note the mention of my K menu entries right-click options Smiling) srpms should also be available shortly on ftp.suse.com when the first SUSE subscription customers receive their package.

Have fun exploring the patches!

Linspire Style

It would be great if someone could extract the Linspire QT style and upload it to kde-look.org. Sadly I have no clue how to do it Sad

Re: Linspire style

Why extract/upload? Just download from http://software.linspire.com/pool-src/los/los-linspireclear-style/

Do we merge all relevant fixes?

I took a look at the patch collection before and noticed a good deal of them are actually various forms of fixes. Some may be the typical 'hot-fix' type, wrapping a pointer op in if (p) { ... }, but some seem to be a bit more than that -- targetting the root cause of the problem.

Do we actively look through these patches or do we depend upon 'insiders' in the various companies to modify our source tree directly? A curious user would like to know Smiling I know we don't merge the parts that the companies think "add value" to their distributions.

Every maintainer is encouraged to do so but there is nobody doing it systematically afaik. If you can identify a patch (or a part of a mega module diff) to correspond to a bugs.kde.org report please annotate to it or open a new one (if you don't feel like tracking down its maintainer).

The experience shows that this seldom works hence this try to collect all patches in one place for maintainers' convenience.

Ehee, seems i'm the first with 1 day ago Smiling ([ http://cekirdek.uludag.org.tr/~caglar/blog/index.php ]) and also convert good looking kicker patches to KDE 3.4 ([ http://cekirdek.uludag.org.tr/~caglar/kdebase-kicker.patch ]) for our distro Pardus Linux ([ http://www.uludag.org.tr/en/ ])

By the way you can find the whole source tree at;

I asked more than "1 day ago" first - but who cares.

Since when does this exist? I wonder why they didn't point me to that (if it already existed).
