dot and logo

jriddell's picture

Recently I became part of the exclusive invite only club of KDE Dot News editors. It's surprisingly time consuming to proofread and filter all the articles into a constant stream of high quality news for the world to learn about KDE from. The submitions queue gets some oddities from spam to rants to an article about how to start kppp, and various completely off-topic stories. Then there's questions like do we link to theKompany when they release a new proprietary product (if it's KDE related) or a new commercial GPLed product (yes) or to Linare with their cheap laptop which happens to come with KDE (I let that one through but has anyone heard of these Linare people? what is their distro based on?). The Dot doesn't tend to cover program releases, that's what kde-apps is for, the trick is to accompany it with an article or review. Anyone who wants to write an article is very welcome, we're always looking for more.

Eagle eyed CVS watchers may have noticed a new logo creeping through KDE. You can find it at my KDE clipart page.

Well...

Just to counteract that "only the dissatisfied ones are vocal about it" thingy a bit: I like it.

Opinion

I will say that the icon adds to a more uniformed look when using KDE right out of the box. I'm not sure about it not being ledgable, I can see the 'K' just fine on many sizes of the panel.
Nice icon in my opinion. I agree with the blue, I hope KDE doesn't go overboard with the colour. My neighbor painted his door and all his windows blue, now I want to punch him for his house getting on my nerves. haha.. joke

Why in the world are we changing the logo icon? What was wrong with the old one? Not blue enough?

1. Why are all the kicker icons becoming blue? Suddenly the new icon becomes incognito, lost in a sea of blue.

2. It's barely legible in its own right, especially the small one. The white K on a reflective background doesn't exactly stand out.

At least the old one is recognisable and is not bad to look at either.

Completeness?

Presumably jriddell will be providing banners for all kde.org sites and subdomains, in all relevant styles (PIM, for instance, has banners that change according to the style), as well as adjusting screenies where the K menu is visible, and remaining splashes.

Or this could be our typical half-assed artwork change, I don't know.

Trademark?

Which one is our trademarked logo? None of them in the clipart gallery JR provides (http://www.kde.org/stuff/clipart.php) is marked as such.

konqueror toolbar icons too

used to be colourful... now all blue! i don't get it. we should make use of colour, not extravagant use, but using all blue doesn't make sense.
