Today was string freeze day for KDE, over 500 commits were made and lots of people were desperatly trying to make the deadline for i18n(). I was struck down with a cold and couldn't manage much but did add some bits to Kontact's new about screen.
In other news another step in the plan for Quaker domination of FOSS took place.
And this is how KControl should look. KDE has a major problem with anyone being able to make usability improvements, the sane defaults thread on Konqueror seems to have lead to nowhere, sigh. But this is a definate candidate for KDE 4 (or do I hear wishes for a 3.5?).

wish
and I'd love to see a KDE 3.5... kde 4 will take quite some time I guess, won't release in 2005 for sure. maybe a quick kde 3.5 (mostly upgrade the programs and things like khtml, juk etc)? lets say during christmass kde 3.5, so summer 2006 for KDE 4 doesn't look that far away from the previous release
Crazy idea...
How about a "Laptop" button, that contains that Battery, IBM and Sony bull.
And "Image Index"? Come on, dumb that down.
Keyboard and Mouse should be under one button...
Really nice
This would indeed be real improvement to the control center.
Hope it is included into mainstream KDE as soon as possible
Very nice
Just have one thing to say:
"FINALLY, someone understood what usability means!!!" =P
Of course, if you don't have Thinkpad or Vaio,
it should be hidden
OR
if in Advanced options, you choose to see them
then it should be shown in grayish/disabled look
"And this is how KControl should look."
Yes.
"KDE has a major problem with anyone being able to make usability improvements, the sane defaults thread on Konqueror seems to have lead to nowhere, sigh."
Fully agree.
"But this is a definate candidate for KDE 4"
Yes, that would be nice for 3.4 or 4, whatever comes first.
Sincerely yours,
Fred.
A usability improvement suggestion
I doubt that someone would have both an IBM Thinkpad and a Sony Vaio in the same computer, so only the relevant icon should be displayed. It is nice to have plugins, but showing them when they are totally irrelevant is a usability pitfall.
Steph
thinkpad
If you can tell me any way to work out whether a computer is a thinkpad or not (or a vaio or not) then that might be possible. Since I know of no way it can't be done.
Hum...
I agree that's the problem. Furthermore, I don't know how those plugins works, although I can imagine they open a specific device in /dev. So perhaps a framework should be put in place so that control panel plugins can query if they are required or not (by opening the devices or, for instance, through HAL). Of course, this is a KDE wide (or at least kdebase) change. My message was not intended as a specific critic of your control panel but rather as write down of some evidence about usability that should be improved one day.
