You sure have been wondering why we integrated the google search bar and why we "secretly" developed gecKo. The reason is simple: We are after you. Flee, but mind you: you can run, but you can't hide! *insert-evil-and-deep-laughter-here*
Read on to learn about all the evil details...

Ok, and now for the serious part of this entry: Some facts about the evil "Google Plugin":

  1. The plugin is shipped since at least KDE 3.2 already
  2. The plugin resides in kdeaddons (the very same module that also atlantikdesigner is in, how could you have missed it for so long?), so it's entirely up to you to install it or not.
  3. The problem of it not being deselectable on the GUI is actually a problem with all Konqueror plugins. If you don't like it, send a patch.
  4. If you don't like it to have google as default, just replace it with your own preferred searchprovider in the source code or make it configurable, it's really straightforward!). After all, it's called the search plugins, as it can also search inside the page, so why not extend it?
  5. If you don't like it at all, "make uninstall" is your friend, but as a developer, you sure know that.
  6. Oh and about your paranoia: I guess they have yellow pages where you live, so find yourself a good psychologist and stop bothering us. Thank you.

silly googlebar

OK, I don't mind the googlebar showing up there but why the heck can't it be in the toolbar area to remove?? Konqueror is awesome. I love the ability to structure Konqueror's layout to fit my work style, having sftp sessions split left right with a tabbed browser instance of work in progress is wonderful. However I like to minimize the real estate used at the top of the screen. I can't fit the the location bar into the main toolbar in the main toolbar (since its un-sizeable) as it keeps dropping off the toolbar and taking a whole line to itself. So no problem, I add my favorite buttons to the location tool bar instead and I should be good to go. But nooooooooooo, now every time I open a new tab or window I get the stupid google bar appearing as a pop-up. Is it an indestructible part of the location bar? That's pretty whacky don't you think?

PS Please don't tell me to remove the "Search Bar" in the Configure Toolbars. As I said, there is NO search bar ANYWHERE in the Configure Toolbar area.

Remove the plug in

I also had trouble removing the Google search bar from Konqueror. I first tried removing it using the "Configure Toolbars" command. After some confusion, I finally found the proper toolbar and removed the Search Bar item. Unlike other toolbar items, the search bar remained in the toolbar until Konqueror was restarted. Upon restart, it was no longer in the toolbar, but instead, a small window popped up with the search box in it.

It appears the only solution is to remove the search bar plug in entirely. I am using Mandrake 10.1 and KDE 3.2.3. I used the following steps to remove the plug in:

1. Start the "Configure Your Computer" program (Start, System, Configuration, Configure Your Computer).
2. Go to the "Software Management" page and select the "Remove" icon.
3. Look under the "Graphical Environment" category and then under the "KDE Workstation" category.
4. Check the "kde-addons-searchbar-3.2.3-17mdk" entry (or similar) and click Remove.

Removing the Google bar.

Considering I installed KDE from packages (so make uninstall is not an option), how do I remove the Google search from my toolbar? It eats up space, and I never use it.

Removing google bar

Settings -> Configure Toolbars -> Location Toolbar -> remove the Search Bar (select and click the left arrow).

Note there are two location toolbars, you need to select the search bar...

Replacing Google

There's no need to change the source code to change the search provider, it is already configurable. Just set your preferred one in Konqueror's configuration dialog and the search bar will use it.

Hey, come on, danimo. Personally attacking Rob doesn't help.
Sure, he overreacts quite often, and often I don't understand his weird reasoning, either. But I don't get too excited about it. I simply learned to ignore his rants.
