How can a group decision be reached?

jriddell's picture

KDE has had the same splash screen for the last two releases so I think it is in need of a new one. It doesn't matter if the new one is better or worse than the KDE 3.1/3.2 splash (it's all artistic taste), this is new for the sake of new otherwise it looks to users like nothing has changed.

There are a few possibles:

  • http://www.os11.com/splash.asp was recently submitted and looks nice but has been accused of using Apple style imagary.
  • Everaldo has said he likes this one http://muse.19inch.net/~jr/tmp/kde33/kde33-3.JPG
  • Quite a few people like this one http://muse.19inch.net/~jr/tmp/kde33/sparkling-kde33-2.png

And quite a few people say that none of them are good enough (the criteria is that they have to fit in with KDE's default widget, icon and desktop themes).

My question is not which of these is best but rather how can a group decision be made when most people have an opinion but essentially it comes down to artistic preference?

Graph designing != software developing

I post because i dont agree with the above...

Leinir says that the way the Kontact splash was choosen -- namely though kde-look -- was good. I think that way is a good way of letting people submit their artwork, and to monitor a public opinion on it. BUT A GRAPHDESIGNER SHOULD MAKE THE FINAL CHOISE!

For the same reason I cannot agree with rmsousa to let a developer choose.

Trough the choises of default (widget-,window-,icon-,sound-) themes, splashscreens, backgrounds, shutdown mascottes, K-Menu-banners and helppage-layouts, KDE set its image. This image should (as in every organisation) be carefully shaped. Graphic Designers usally supervise this, and make desicions on this.

I worked a lot with graphdesigners at my last job and learnt alot from them. From this knowlege i think that:
- the OSX splashes are bad for KDE's image (which is a stong and original image to be proud of)
- the sparkling K-logo is shit (sorry for sounding harsh)
- and the http://muse.19inch.net/~jr/tmp/kde33/uga-yet-another-splash.png splash uses a logo in reading text, which is against all graphic-design-rules, and thus shit (again sorry for the harshness)

See the splashes that im talking about here:

I agree with everaldo's choise: http://muse.19inch.net/~jr/tmp/kde33/kde33-3.JPG , and i like the kde logo upgrade that he did here http://muse.19inch.net/~jr/tmp/kde33/everaldo-splashnew-KDE.jpg . In general I like everaldo's work...

Maybe it is time for KDE to have a group, or a person (everalo?) to supervise the image of KDE.

I certainly think so.

Kontact

It seems to me that the way the new Kontact splash was well done... Post the suggestions on kde-look.org and give them a KDE 3.3 prefix, so you can sort them. That way we will have The People's Voice to tell us what to do and where to put it Eye-wink

Let the one with commit access to KSplash CVS choose

I personally don't care, all of them are good enough. I also think we need a new one. So, let the one who has the power to change it choose.
