A New Decade, a new beginning...

spstarr's picture
It's been awhile since I've posted. 2009 was a year of reflection and figuring out a new direction. Now that 2010 is here, things have been up on the up turn. I accepted a position at RIM (Research In Motion) and look forward to exciting stuff.

This does mean however, my KDE development as it stands, must cease, at least within Plasma. I enjoyed the time I had to help KDE grow, even if it was a small bit. It's sad letting go of a baby you nurtured and developed (in my case the weather plasmoid) but now someone else can make improvements and help it grow, I will be able to answer questions though.

Sometimes the directions you take make unexpected turns, but in the long run, a good future can be made.

It's really a shame that

It's really a shame that companies make contributing to Free software projects impossible, the very same projects they use to verify their applicant's ability. Shawn is by the way not the first KDE contributor to cease his development in KDE because he now works for RIM. There's a number of KDE contributor who have worked for a company owned by an ex core KDE contributor which got acquired by RIM. All the people that have worked for this company and who were KDE contributors had to cease their development activities.

This is not how companies and Free software communities can live together.

"must cease, at least within

"must cease, at least within Plasma"

Because you chose so ? Because you won't have anymore time ? It may sounds like your new job won't allow it or something like that, which I would find sad! Anyway, thanks a lot for your contributions! It's currently 15°c here and cloudy, and I can know that easily using the weather plasmoid Smiling

And have fun at your new job!

Re: "must cease, at least within

My new job won't allow it, I'm sure of this. I still will get a confirmation from them but right now, from what I know, it's likely, "no" :/

Thanks, should be great!

That's really sad Sad. That makes RIM kinda unsympathetic. However, I wish you all the best at RIM.

Well too bad for KDE. We're

Well too bad for KDE. We're loosing a contributor because of a close minded company. How come KDE can interfere with their business. I will never buy a RIM phone.
