I finally decided I needed a laptop. My dream machine would meet the following criteria:
- Linux friendly. I would like to "vote with my wallet" and buy a machine for which there exist open source drivers for all components.
- I will be compiling a lot with it, so it should be quite fast at this. This means a fast processor, a decent hard disk and not turning into a bakeoven everytime a binary is linking.
- Not the size of an aircraft-carrier. But not too small too.
If you know the model of my dream machine, please tell me!

thinkpad
I just ordered a Thinkpad Z61t today... it's rumored to work well with Linux. At my old job, I used a Thinkpad T60 that ran SuSE like a pro, so I have high hopes. I believe the Intel wireless and graphics are well-supported.
I got a Thinkpad Z61t
And I haven't regretted buying it. Almost everything works on it. the only thing I haven gotten to work is the fingerprint scanner and the built-in card reader. I believe it should be possible to get the fingerprint scanner to work, but I haven't bothered trying. The same counts for the card reader.
I'm running Kubuntu Edgy on it.
System76.com
I'll second the System76 laptops. They come with Ubuntu, but it's easy enough to apt-get install kubuntu-desktop. The Dasher laptops are 13.3" but they also have 14.1" and 15" and all have core 2 duo options.
Support is killer too, but I assume you won't need tech support.
Cheers.
System76.com
System76 sells laptops pre-loaded and fully supported by Linux. Memory cards (SD/MMC), Wireless, Suspend, etc work out of the box. And you don't have to pay the Microsoft tax
Only in US :-(
Unfortunately, System76 does not ship in France, so it's not an option. Thanks for suggesting it though.
thinkpad or mbp
A macbook pro or a thinkpad T60 (X60 if you want a tablet) with core 2 duos
