I still haven't managed to get sound working on my new HP Pavilion a1320y desktop with Fedora Core 4. Read a lot of suggestions in Fedora Forum without any luck so far.
Figured why not just upgrade to Fedora Core 5? So I did, with less than optimal results. The graphics went all haywire. Even the console graphics were unreadable. Guess the installation made some assumptions about my graphics card that aren't true.
Anyhow, Fedora Core 4 has been re-installed.
Help getting sound working greatly appreciated.

What problems?
You should at least include a link to a problem description - at the moment everyone reading your blog can only guess. At the moment the usual idea would be: open the alsamixer in the shell, and play around with the options while playing a sound with something with direct alsa output somewhere else.
When you are lucky it's just a silly volume control, that was it once for me.
In other cases, have a look at the gentoo-documentation - although it is not written for Fedora Core it often has several information which can be useful to locate the origin of the problem:

Oh, right. I forgot to mention that the soundcard isn't being found. The soundcard is supposed to be "Integrated 7.1 Capable Intel(R) High Def. Audio"
When I run 'system-config-soundcard' all I see is "cat: /etc/asound.conf: No such file or directory" and the GUI never starts.

So the problem is more alsa-specific than Fedora Core specific?
What says lspci? The most intel chipsets have names like "82801DB" - with these names it would be easier to search for drivers.
