Well, I said originally that I wasn't going to release this, but the reactions have just been too funny so far to pass it up.
It's not an official release, yet, of course - I still have to implement the rendering code for the sliders and tabbars and probably a few other widgets too. But the sneak preview is out...

The new style is called Asteroid, and you can download it today from http://c133.org/asteroid_style.tar.bz2 and do whatever you like with it. There's no README, it's 100% coded from the ground up (I didn't start with any other style), and it's scarily similar to the appearance of Windows 2000.
In order to connive it into building, you'll want to do a 'make -f admin/Makefile.common' from the unpacked source directory. This will generate the 'configure' script. From there on out, it's the standard ./configure && make && sudo make install routine.
Any flames are welcome.

Bad icons
I've never liked the icons in windows. I have however seen some nice KDE icon in screenshots that wern't crystal or cartoon like but I couldn't find them anywhere in kde-look.org .
Debian Package?
please provide a deb, or better, an apt repository
since I don't use debian...
The likelihood of me providing debs or an apt repository for you are pretty low.
On the other hand, of course, if someone were to provide debs or set up an apt repository, I would be glad to link to it.
wo0t
A friend of mine was looking for this so he could run linux on his box at work.. =] hehehe
More on this
Okay, I think everyone will agree that the Theme Manager is almost totally useless in KDE 3.1 and even dangerous (see my bug about it destroying my entire system by using the tehme manager).
This is why I am suggesting that a theme package should be able to change everything about KDE's appearance, sound and feel. This means that everything in the "Look n Feel" section, System Notifications in Sound & Multimidia and Desktop should be completely altered by a theme, everything there.
This would finally make it easier for people to share their desktop with the world. It will also help businesses easily deploy a custom desktop and newbies will no longer have to mess with odd installation instructions and style compilations etc.
There won't be any more of this:
What Window Decoration is that? What fonts are you using? What icons ar ethose? What wallpaper is that? What style is that? etc. Now you can simply point them to a theme.
Themes should also be easy to create, there could be a button such as "create theme from setup" which could atutomagically make a theme from the user's current desktop.
This way I can have all my desktops look and act the way I want them to without wasting hours.

Nevermind
It seems that bug report was closed and someone split my suggestions.

What's different in Qt 3.2's dropdown thingy?
m all for KDE using as much of Qt as possible if it has the features needed already, what's better in the Qt 3.2 dropdown menu?
Anyway, this is the best KDE Win2000 immitation, almost as good as the XPDE immitation http://xpde.com/!
I just hope that the small things left to fix/add on it will be and maybe redmond will eb removed from 3.2 with this one.
I agree with "Oh and the menubar would be even more real if you'd only draw the lower part of it (and not left, right + top)." and taht toolbar separators are missing, there are a few other small theme fixes that could be made and it's perfect.
BTW: WIll KDE 3.2 finally have a theme manager that's useful for something, one that would allow me with a single theme package to change all the options in the "Appearance and Themes" section of Kcontrol. One that could come with fonts, cpp styles, widnow decorations, color schemes etc.
Also one taht doesen't destroy KDE 3.1 when I open a theme.
theme manager
Actually the theme manager is being removed for KDE 3.2. It may again resurface at some point. I actually agree that it makes sense to preserve and to turn into something useful, but as it currently sucks and we're in a feature freeze it won't happen until post-3.2.
Actually I think Gnome does a pretty good job of this with their theme manager in the 2.4 RCs. There are a few themes each of which sets several values. On the other hand it's frustratingly hard to configure the details.
And actually I think KPersonalizer gets us pretty close to the beginnings of what we would want; and I actually kind of like the idea of "themes by a wizard"...
second screenshot question
the window on the left doesn't look as refined as the window on the right, why is that and which is the real style? The one on the left isn't as nice.
re: question
The style on the left is the Redmond/Windows theme from Qt
(which lookse quite well using Qt apps, but sucks when used with KDE apps)
Oh, and one more thing (not related to the question above): the toolbar separators are missing?
