Last month nookie was on irc and we were talking about the
msn clients out there. all of them functioned really well
except for the look and feel of it. gaim is good but it looks as ugly as gnome it self. then we have kopete which works well with yahoo and other protocols but not so well with msn ( i think we have to blame Microsoft for that. kopete is wonderfully done.). Then we have kmess which is also really cool. but what all these clients lack in common is the themability the look and feel is fixed and there is very little the user can do to change the look and feel of the application. These day's we are planing things to write a client that is themable . but we don't really have an idea about how many people actually want some thing like this.
Sj.
Noooo - don't do this!
Seriously, I like kopete for many reasons - one of them is there's no unnecessary theming stuff in it.
It's nice to give the messages some individual look, but I don't need this.
When it comes to the look of the contact list and the windows themselves (maybe you plan to get some none rectangular windows?) I really prefer the way it's implemented at the moment.
With every theme you install you have to think about how to use the UI, every control looks a little different.
It's a mess.
What would a desktop look like where every application could have a custom theme?
When you take a look at the FAQ on kopete.kde.org, there is the question "Will you make the user-interface skinnable?" and the answer is definitive NO.
An important reason is given there too:
"Kopete was invented to be a KDE Instant-Messenger and this also includes having a KDE Look-n-Feel."
As others said before, please begin to fix serious bugs and implement requested features like file transfers with ICQ before you even think of implementing features most people won't use, many will be annoyed with and most certainly introduce many more bugs.
I think...
I think it would be a nice feature, it is not the feature I want the most in an IM client.
If we are talking kopete here (can't see the need for a new client if kopete could be modified to support this) there is one feature I want way more then this and that is filetransfer over all networks that supports it, especially ICQ. To me that is a necesity (spelling?) not just a nice-to-have feature in a IM-client. After the needed features, nice-to-have features like a themable IM-client is what I want.
In short I want it, just not the most.
Agreed
Yes .. that's true.. I think the subject should be theme support for
kopete.. it's a wonderfull application. I know that there are some
people that live to chat.. and when they have a nice GUI it helps to attract people .. I don't see any plans on kopete TODO list to add
theme support..
Yes there are so many things that needs to be completed on kopete..
I wish that the kopete dev team fixes them soon. I normally use
kcompmgr for shadows transparency . The whole desktop crashed
then that yellow bubble pops up..
Think that quanta and kopete are two application that needs urgent attention. as they are really buggy.
