The final round of voting for the 2005 Linux Journal Readers' Choice Awards has begun. KDE is nominated in no less than eight categories. What I especially like is that individual KDE application are nominated together with the top open source projects. KDevelop is competing with GCC and Eclipse in the development tool category. Kate runs with Vim and Emacs for the best text editor. Kontact is nominated with LaTex and OpenOffice.org for the office award. That shows again that KDE is not only a nicely integrated desktop, but also provides a fantastic environment to create world-class software projects. The final round closes 28 July 2005. Vote now!

What's "groupware"?

Well, groupware is a pretty lame category. It can mean all and nothing. It's more a buzzword or marketing term than a real description. So I understand that there is no groupware category in the LJ awards.
Office is actually a quite good category for Kontact. The scope of Kontact is constantly expanding, it definitely is more than a mail client, and it certainly is a central piece for office use.
I think it also has a bit different focus than Evolution now. Kontact provides a platform for integrating applications. Evolution focuses more on its core components what you can for example see from the fact that the Evolution summary view got removed.
That said, I agree that the obvious comparison would have been Kontact and Evolution. But as I said above the actual categorization does also make some sense.

Kontact vs OpenOffice.org
While I love Kontact and use it everyday -- more so than OpenOffice.org -- pitting it against OOo isn't fair.
Just because Microsoft places Outlook in their Office suite doesn't mean Kontact is an "office program". It's a groupware program, and should be voted against Evolution.
