I like Aaron’s suggestion to label more clearly the adoption status of the various drafts at FreeDesktop.org I also believe that at some point we must be able to say “this is something that is widely adopted and deserves to be a standard

Well...
Wouldn't something be "widely adopted" when it's actually widely used? At the moment there is nearly zero public effort beyond fd.o to make anything done there more widely known and used, and when someone think the technology/spec is ripe for further adoption they usually proclaim it as "standard" instead communicating it as something worth to adopt to other projects which didn't adopt it yet.
Keeping the process context within fd.o (as it pretty much is at the moment) or even LSB or FSG instead increasing communication with the "outside world" would imnsho only make this worse instead better.
