KDE4 On Solaris : Hello World!

KDE 4 on Solaris came to life today on my Opteron box.

Screenshots of running KDE4 [ kdelibs/kdepimlibs/kdebase-workspace/kdebase-runtime ]:

KDE4Solaris

[ my Smugmug gallery ].

Built with Sun Studio 12, QT 4.3.1 and the Apache Standard C++ Library.

OpenGL/Compositing effects are enabled. I Frankenstein'ed the S10U4 Xorg by
adding a bunch of X Extensions Libraries. I was very bold and enabled

Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "True"

And now the real work begins. Smiling

Marble on Solaris

So, i had a productive IRC chat this morning with Tackat, who introduced me to
Marble.

Marble is part of kde-edu, and can be built either as a KDE4 application, or just
as a standalone QT application. It runs very nicely on Solaris with QT 4.3.0:

Truth and Truthiness

So, OpenSolaris got zing'ed at LinuxWorld by IBM. Of course, that sent Sun's
PR Department to DEFCON 5.

Just got back from a nice trip to California. Mostly Berkeley and San Francisco.

Pics from this trip are here.

And yes, this blog is related to KDE. Smiling The clue is in the photo set.

KDE at OpenSolaris and SunFreeware

KDE now has a Community at OpenSolaris. And Steve Christensen had made KDE available for download from SunFreeware as well.

KDE Is Bloated

so, KDE suffers from bloat, over-engineering and user confusion. apparently.

personally, i never thought that to be the case until now, but, there are others who seem to hold these beliefs to be self-evident. i respect everyone's opinions and beliefs, even though they may be different than, or opposite to, my own.

KDE 3.4.1 Solaris 10 IA32/UltraSPARC-II Released!

This past Sunday (July 10) i finally released KDE 3.4.1 for Solaris 10, for both Intel/AMD and UltraSPARC-II. Both of them built with the Sun Studio 10 compilers. Yes, you can install Solaris 10 on an Intel based PC and run KDE 3.4.1 on it. Pentium IV minimum, or AMD. Or UltraSPARC-II minimum.
